We start with that new study suggesting that HIV is becoming less infectious and less deadly asit evolves. Scientists at the University of Oxford studied hundreds of women carrying the virusin Botswana. As a result, they’ve concluded that the viruses are now replicating more slowly andtaking longer to cause full blown AIDS. So how significant a finding is this?
Well, it’s a good study that showed what we call the virus adapting to certain types of geneticbackgrounds in individuals referred to as HLA. Each of us have different HLA profiles. The studyis elegant science. I think it would be really premature at his time, to now say that the virusesare gonna be much less virulent and not really transmitting very effectively. I think the sciencebehind the observation of the adaptation is sound. But we’ve got to be very careful that wemake a real projection of what the ultimate end point of this is going to be. It’s really too earlyto say that, I believe.
And a weakened HIV virus would still be dangerous?
Well, certainly the HIV that’s right now circuiting in the global community is a highlydangerous virus. If you show, as the studies show, that there are adaptations to certaingenetic backgrounds that could suggest that the adaptation could weaken the virus. That’sinteresting observation, but the impact on the global AIDS pandemic right now, I think it’stoo premature to say that that’s going to have a significant impact.
So are there implications for people already infected with the HIV virus?
No, I don’t believe so. What they are talking about is the future evolution of the virus.

A Syrian opposition delegate arriving in Switzerland for a peace conference has called forPresident Assad and his government to stand trial at the International Criminal Court in thelight of newly released photographic evidence. It suggested that the government has starved, tortured and killed about 11,000 prisoners in detention centers. A spokesman for the Syriangovernment said the report was a political instrument to put pressure on President Assad. The conference in Montreux on Wednesday will bring together for the first timerepresentatives from the government and the main opposition umbrella group, the NationalCoalition. Bridget Kendall reports from Montreux.
It's no coincidence that this new report has been released on the eve of the Swiss talks, forPresident Assad's opponents had reinforced their claim that his regime is murderous andcriminal. But the UN Secretary General won't want his peace talks to collapse into a shoutingmatch. Already there’s talk of possible local truces and humanitarian access to besieged areas. But even that may be a tall order, given the uncertainty that the Assad government will makereal concessions and the lack of sway the opposition delegation has over many rebel groupsfighting in Syria.

In addition, the fighting has exacerbated ethnic tensions. Bringing a divided nation backtogether will perhaps be the biggest challenge of all.
