Well it’s certainly been a dramatic night of election results. But it’s important not to forgetthat today is also the 70th anniversary of VE day. I vividly remember, as a little boy growing upin Liverpool in the late 1940s, my mother’s exciting descriptions of an amazing night at a localstreet party - of music, dancing, bright lights and laughter.
When I was a bit older she gave me another side of the story – of being deeply troubled thatnight by very mixed emotions. Like everyone else she was thankful the German War was over –and wanted to celebrate that.
But earlier in the war her husband, my father, the pilot of a Lancaster bomber, had been shotdown and killed. And so on VE night, as the party became more exuberant, my mother foundherself torn apart by her genuine joy at the victory and the aching sorrow of her personal loss.
In the end, friends persuaded her that my father, and all who’d lost their lives on duty, or ascivilians, would have wanted those they’d left behind to celebrate the defeat of Nazi evil.
Of course, my mother wasn’t alone in finding VE night a bitter-sweet experience. Tears of joymingled with tears of sorrow for many people mourning loved ones, or worrying about thosestill fighting or imprisoned in the Far East.
The holding together of contrary emotions is classically expressed in St John’s gospel wherethe joy of Jesus’ Resurrection is already present within the sorrow of his Crucifixion.
In our national life there are sometimes special moments when something touches collectiveconsciousness so powerfully that people with contrasting outlooks and diverse backgroundsfind themselves drawn together.
The two Minutes Silence at Remembrance is an example of national coherence, as it will be thisafternoon when at the Cenotaph, and across the country, there’ll be a pause in political activityas people with sharply opposing views and strong emotions, who voted in different waysyesterday, stand together, united in sorrow and thanksgiving for the Fallen - whose sacrificemade possible our ability to vote freely in the election.
This 70th anniversary finishes on Sunday, after the national service in Westminster Abbey, witha veterans’ reception hosted by the Royal British Legion. The climax will be a flypast of modernand historic aircraft. When I hear the roar of Merlin engines and the Lancaster comes into view,I know I’ll be holding together mixed emotions too.

As the first results begin to come in from Britain's closely-fought general election, an exit pollsuggests the Conservatives, led by the Prime Minister, David Cameroon, will become by far thelargest party. The poll, commissioned by the BBC and other broadcasters, pose theConservatives on 316 seats in Parliament, just short of an overall majority. It says the mainopposition, Labour Party, will trail in second place with 239 seats. Peter Kellner from the pollingfirm, YouGov, told the BBC there could be several reasons for today's poll.
“The first is that the exit poll is right, and all the polls that came out in the last 24 hours, oursis one of eleven, all eleven showed Conservative and Labour neck and neck. Second possibility isexit poll is wrong, and the eve of poll polls were right. Third possibility, something happenedtoday. We interviewed six thousand people today and we could find no sign of any netmovement in any direction. So I think we can rule out an on-the-day shift. Fourth possibility isit is somewhere in the middle that the Tories have done bits better than the eve of poll.”
Marco Gholf is a senior Conservative.“If this is correct, then the public respondedenthusiastically to the campaign that we put forward, and rewarded David Cameroon and ourteam with an increased number of seats. And I have to say, if the poll's right, that'sunprecedented for more than thirty years.”
The former leader of the Liberal Democrats, Paddy Ashdown, also dismissed the exit poll iswrong, and pointed to a different predicted outcome in another survey.
“If this exit poll is right, I will publicly eat my hat on your programme. I think this YouGov pollright now, which gives us not 10 seats, not 20 seats, but 31 seats. So one or other of thesetwo polls is wrong, and I'll bet you my hat eaten on your programme for that's wrong.”
The exit poll also predicts that the Scottish National Party, which wants independence, is oncourse for an overwhelming victory in Scotland. The poll says the SNP will take 58 out of the59 seats in Scotland, making huge gains from the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats. Thegeneral election comes 8 months after Scotland voted in a referendum to remain part of theUnited Kingdom.

The U.S. Senate has approved a bill that will give Congress the power to review an internationalnuclear agreement with Iran. The vote was a significant step in a long-running dispute withPresident Obama about Congressional oversight of any Iran deal. The bill now goes to theHouse of Representatives, which is also expected to pass it. Barbara Plett Usher is inWashington.
“The legislation would give Congress 30 days to review any final deal with Iran, and preventPresident Obama from suspending Congressional sanctions during that time. It's acompromise between lawmakers, who say they've been sidelined during the nuclear talks, andthe President, who believes Congressional interference would hamper negotiations. But thebill stalled in the Senate as some Republican Senators tried to add tough conditions that wouldhad provoked a presidential veto. This vote ends that debate and approves a version Mr.Obama could accept. He would still have the power, though, to automatically reject the resultsof any Congressional review.”

there have been conflicting reports about whether the deputy leader of Islamic State has beenkilled in an airstrike on a mosque in Iraq. I think the people who like Prince Charles like Prince Charles because he does this stuff, and thepeople who don’t like him don’t like him because he does this stuff, so in a sense, where we areis that we have more flesh on the bones of what this stuff is. But it is not something that Ithink is mercifully going to shift public opinion.

As early results come in from around Britain after a closely-fought campaign, an exit poll hassuggested that the Conservative Party leader, David Cameroon, will return to office as PrimeMinister. The poll predicts Conservatives on 316 seats in Parliament, just short of an overallmajority. The main opposition, Labour Party, has described the exit poll as inconsistent withsurveys throughout the campaign, which forecast a close finish. Here is our politicalcorrespondent, Rob Watson.
“The first results from across the U.K.'s 650 constituencies appear to confirm the exit poll'sprediction of a truly dramatic outcome to Britain's general election. David Cameroon and theConservatives have done far better than expected, and Labour and the Liberal Democratsdisastrously worse. Most striking of all, perhaps, is the possibility that the Scottish NationalParty could win as many as 58 out of Scotland's 59 seats. As to the other so-called smallerparties, the anti-E.U. UKIP, and Greens, it seems they may have won many votes, but theBritain's electoral system means that has not translated into more than a handful of seats.”
Despite being the largest party, the poll suggests the Conservatives would need to form acoalition or lead a minority government. The former Conservative Minister, Ken Clarke, said itwas overwhelmingly likely that David Cameroon would stay as Prime Minister.
“It's far too soon to start speculating about what sort of government we'll formed, who to dealwith whom. But David has had a good result, much better I think than most people hadexpected, and the chances of David Cameroon carring on as Prime Minister areoverwhelmingly likely. But it's going to be a different sort of government, and a different sortof parliament.”
But Labour's Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has questioned the exit poll results.
“Even if the exit poll is right, the overall impact of that is that the coalition has lost itsmajority. It had a majority of 73. That now seems to have disappeared. And that, I think, does mean that, you know, what David Cameroon said was that he was aiming to win amajority. He has failed to do that. And it does look like that this is very difficult, even on thisexit poll, for him to command the confidence of the House of Commons.”
The landslide victory predicted for the Scottish National Party north of the border reflects thesurge in support it enjoyed since failing secure independence in last year's referendum. Mostof their gains would be at the expense of Labour. Colin Blane is at a count in Glasgow.
“Grim faces in the Labour count here in Glasgow. I was talking, for example, to the SNP teamwatching Glasgow's northeast, which is hardest of all the seats for them to win, and they saythey are well ahead, they are elsewhere, the story is similar. So it looks as if Labour are ontrack to lose all 7 Glasgow seats. And bear in mind that 6 of these seats have majority of overten thousand.”

Life is known to exist in some of the most inhospitable places from the polar ice tohydrothermal vents. Well, now scientists have uncovered life more than 2,000 meters beneaththe floor of the Pacific Ocean. Thefindings have been presented at the American GeophysicalUnion in San Francisco from where our science correspondent Rebecca Morale reports.
Life has found a way. The microbes were discovered in 2012 when a gigantic drill penetrated arecord-breaking 2.5 kilometers beneath the sea floor off the coast of Japan. Now experimentshave revealed that the single-celled organisms are, even for microbes, incredibly small. Theysurvive on an unusual diet of methanecompounds, the first time this has been seen in thedeep.
With each expedition, the deeper we drill, we still keep finding cells. I’m not surprised that lifecan do it, cuz at this point I’ve been continually impressed at what life is able to accomplish. But it is fascinating to study, for sure.
The findings also give hope in the hunt for life on other planets. If life can survive in the mostextremeconditions on earth, perhaps it’s found a way to cope with the harsh environmentselsewhere in the cosmos. Our science correspondent Rebecca Morale.
A long-lost Walt Disney Christmas film from 1927 has been found in a library archive inNorway. The movie featuring Oswald the lucky rabbit has been restored and we’ll get its firstpublic screening later this week. So where does Oswald fit into the Disney family tree? JuliePeacock has been finding out.
Before Mickey Mouse, there was Oswald the lucky rabbit. He was created by Walt Disney in1927, a year before the world’s most famous mouse. One called "Empty Socks" was consideredlost. Until now, the only knownfootage was a 25-second segment owned by the Museum ofModern Art in New York. But the National Library ofNorway discovered a long-forgotten 5.5-minute film amongst their archives in 2008. Since then, they’ve been working to restore it andjust thought to be the only near complete version in existence. Only one minute is missing.
In "Empty Socks", Oswald dresses up as Santa Clause and celebrates Christmas with a group oforphans. Shortly after the film was made, Walt Disney lost the right to the character in adispute with Universal Studios.
