Three hundred survivors gathered, many in scarfs made from the blue-and-white stripes of the same prison uniforms they once wore on freezing winter days like today. If Auschwitz is a symbol of the worst that men can inflict, then they are a symbol of the human capacity to endure. The day belongs to the living eyewitnesses to some of the worst history's horror. But they were prayers for the many dead too, echoing in the grayish sunset.

This case of alleged pedophilia within the Catholic Church in Spain came to light last October when a 24-year-old man went to the police. In the court documents which have now been published he claims he was forced to masturbate a priest at the church called Roman Martinez. Pope Francis, who promised a zero tolerance approach to sexual abuse cases in the Catholic Church, launched an investigation into the case back in November.

In the capital Kinshasa, a funeral ceremony can be confused with a birthday party. It’s festive, people dressed extravagantly, and there is usually a concert, or even a comedy show to entertain the guests. And as the BBC’s Moore Julian reports, families in the DRC often spend a lot more money than they can afford to on elaborate funerals.
Rows and rows of market stalls all selling must-have items for Kinshasa’s profitable funeral market. On my right, there are flowers, crosses. And on my left, several coffin-making workshops.
My name is Dickson. In this workshop we make 100 or 120 coffins each month. You, I mean, as a carpenter, how did you decide to go into coffin-making as opposed to other forms of carpentry?
Mortality is very high in our country. And people are willing to spend more, a lot more on coffin than they are spending on their living room furniture. You see, if someone dies in Kinshasa, his family will spenda lot of money on drinks, food, clothes, nice coffin, money that they wouldn’t be spending to give to the person while he was suffering so that they can save his life for example. It’s not clear what’s behind the overspending, but some say it might be the influence of Evangelical movements, who tell their followers that they will be rewarded if they spend money on religion. Others say it’s just peer pressure. If you have spent this much money on your funeral, then I must spend even more. This is where the morning ceremony starts at the morgue in the hospital. There is a huge queue of about a hundred people here very well dressed who’ll cry publicly expressing their grief. And outside the morgue, there is a decorated car waiting. It’s got photos of the man who died, pasted all over it. We’ve just left the hospital. Now when we are driving with the procession of about twenty cars, there is one man who is a professional camera man who is filming from outside of his car. He’s been recruited just for the occasion. So we are now driving through the city. One of the cars is making this ambulance noise that you can hear

The brunt of the attacks was against the military and police targets in provincial capital el-Arish,but other towns were hit as well. A car bomb was set off outside a military base in el-Arish, while mortar rounds were fired at other targets, including a police car and several check points. Northern Sinai has long been a violent and unstable region. The army has launched major operations to try to stop the violence but so far failed. A jihadist group calling itself Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis has become a biggest threat there, staging many attacks on security targets, especially since the ousting of the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

The government in Portugal has approved rules allowing the descendants of Jews who were expelled from the country centuries ago to claim Portuguese citizenship. Applicants will have to prove a strong link to Portugal as Alison Roberts explains.
This might, the government said, be a combination of surname, language used in the family or proof of direct descent. Many of the thousands of Jews expelled in 1497, 5 years after Spain’s own order of expulsion or who fled later to avoid forced converting to Christianity continue to use the former Portuguese in their new communities in Amsterdam, Istanbul, New York, and across Brazil. As the government notes, Jews settled in this part of Iberia long before the kingdom of Portugal was founded in the 12 century. At present, only a few thousand live here but according to officials, numerous safaried Jews from around the global are now showing an interest in applying for nationality.
In neighboring Spain, a similar law is still being debated.

Behind these falls lies the new Greek government's desire to end austerity policies and have its debts to the eurozone reduced. If he can not get an agreement with Europe, it's conceivable that Greece might end up leaving the Eurozone. The fact that it's possible means the country's banks could face customers pulling their money out and there are reports that some have done so already. That risk has hit the bank share prices very hard. One Piraeus bank fell nearly 30% and has in total lost almost half of its values since Sunday's election.

Kicks, sauces pouredover the head or wet fish round the face, some of the abuse junior chefs have experienced. Evidence suggests the technique would be safe but nobody can be certain. It also raises ethical questions.

Mueller was killed in an Jordanian air strike last Friday, but the White House
spokesman Josh Earnest said it was not possible to be specific about how and
when she died. In reference to the claims from IS he said the United States
did not believe there were any civilians in the area in which the air strikes
had taken place. What's become clear is that over the weekend Kayla Mueller's
family received information from IS, which the intelligence services here
analysed and which allowed them to conclude that she was dead.
A White House spokesman has said that the United States is not coordinating its military

Officials from the White House, State
Department and National Security Council all denied the US was coordinating any aspect of
its air campaign with the Syrian government. They said Washington
had simply informed Syria 's
UN ambassador when the strikes against Islamic State militants were about to
begin in September and warned Damascus
to stay out of the way. Mr Assad also said there was no direct cooperation, but
he told the BBC he was getting general information about the campaign through
third parties including Iraq .
The State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki played down the significance of
such a bad channel, saying she wasn't surprised that Iraq had relations with its
neighbours.
In eastern Ukraine
fighting has spread to the government-controlled eastern city of Kramatorsk , where the
Ukrainian military headquarters has been shelled. Four soldiers died, and at
least eight civilians were killed in nearby residential areas. Separatists
denied shelling the city. A spokesman for the European security organisation,
the OSCE, Michael Bociurkiw told the BBC that a build-up of heavy weaponry was
continuing in the run-up to peace talks scheduled for Wednesday.
"What our monitors are seeing are many
unmarked vehicles, many unmarked convoys, tanks, armoured personnel carriers
that are heading towards cities like Donetsk .
So definitely not only that build-up of heavy weaponry but that indiscriminate
shelling, that is taking such a huge toll on the civilian population."

The football Premier League has announced a
70% increase in the amount that broadcasters will pay to televise live matches
in Britain .
It's reached a deal with two companies, Sky and BT Sport, worth a record $7.8bn
over three years. Here's our business editor Kamal Ahmed.
In terms of a division between Sky and BT
for live football on television, the announcement today was not much of a
surprise. In terms of the money paid though, it is a shock. The high cost
reveals how important live football has become for paid television. Football
fans will be concerned that the high price paid will mean higher costs to watch
football. The Premier League will be celebrating. More cash from the
broadcasters means more cash for Premier League football clubs and the stars
they pay to employ.

What
have the following three movies got in common? Whiplash, American Sniper and
The Grand Budapest Hotel.Do the three films pass the Bechdel Test? The what?
The Bechdel Test. It’s named after the US cartoonistAlison Bechdel. To
pass, a movie must have at least two women characters who talk to each other
about something other than a man. The answer to that question is that they
don’t pass the Bechdel Test. Now London
is hosting a film festival called the Bechdel Test Fest. My colleague Julian
Martial asked its curator what it means if a film does pass the test.
It just
got two female characters in it. And one can hope that that means the dynamics
of their character and the narratives that they pursue within the film is more
dynamic than something like somebody’s wife, mother, sister.
In Sweden it’s
been introduced alongside certification as a means for customers to decide
whether films are worthy of their attention.
Yes. I
think it has benefitted the film industry because it raises the topic of where
are all the women infilms and the fact that barely half of the films that get
cinematic releases pass. And you have 2.2 for men per one female on the screen.
It’s just crazy statistics especially when women make up half if not moreof the
cinema-going audience.
But the
Bechdel Test is not a guarantee that a film will present interesting female
parts for actors, is it?No,
that’s actually right. But it’s interesting she raise a topic and make
conversation about it.
Here in Britain ,
the main opposition Labor Party has pledged a policy of zero tolerance of
homophobia bullying in English schools if it wins the general election in May.
The Party’s shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt said the persistence of
homophobia in schools was partly the legacy of legislation in the 1980s known
as Section 28 which prevented schools from promoting homosexuality. Mr. Hunt
said a Labor government would encourage gay and lesbian teachers to declare
their sexuality openly in classrooms. So would thatbe a good idea? Well, here
is a sample of opinion from teachers, pupils and experts.
My head
said to me “you don’t need to tell anyone that you are a lesbian”.
I don’t
think they need to explain their sexuality to people because, you know, it
doesn’t define who they are like hundred percent. They can still do their job
without telling you their sexuality.

Alexis
Tsipras told parliament he will rehire thousands of sacked public-sector
workers and reopen the state broadcaster which was closed to save money. He
said Greece
wanted to pay its massive debts but under a new deal. Germany is Greece 's biggest creditor. The
nations who have given massive loans to Athens
insist it must stick to reforms. And they weren't to be pleased either by Greece 's new
Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis. In an interview with Italy 's Rai television he described
the euro as fragile and said the single currency was like a castle of cards,
adding if you take out the Greek card the others will collapse.

Emily Buchanan reports.
The
proposal appeals to be broadly a resurrection of the previous Minsk deal reached last September. It would
likely involve an immediate ceasefire and a creation of a demilitarised zone to
keep the warring sides apart. The problem is Russian-back rebels have advanced
since last September, and their new troop positions would mean Ukraine losing
control of yet more territory. Even if a deal is agreed many wonder if the
rebels on the ground will stop fighting.

The
signals are increasingly positive that a deal on Iran 's nuclear programme maybe in
sight. Mr Zaref said afterwards "we're reaching the point where it is
quite possible to make an agreement and I do not believe anything will be
different a year down the road." There's a reference to the possibility of
extending the current interim agreement beyond the end of June. But the most
significant comment probably came from Iran 's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei, who's reported to say he would go along with a deal that is in the
making. The hope is for progress on the central issue - the scope of Iran 's
enrichment activity - and if the movement can be achieved here, then it could
be the key to resolving other area's disagreement.

After almost a year of battling Ebola in Liberia and more than 4,000 deaths in the country, this is a significant milestone, but authorities are remaining extremely cautious. While still now, no known cases of the virus in Liberia, both neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone recorded a rise in new infections last week. The World Health Organisation points out the virus was able to move between their poorest borders when the outbreak began, and it warns that could happen again if people let down their guard.
Syrian state media says the army has killed the top military commander of the al-Nusra Front, a rebel group linked to Al-Qaeda. It said he was killed in an attack on a meeting of al-Nusra Front leaders in the province of Idlib. The al-Nusra Front is one of the most powerful groups fighting to overthrow the Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, and was behind a major attack in the city of Aleppo on Wednesday. The U.N. Envoy to Syria has suggested that he will be prepared to negotiate with the al-Nusra Front as part of his effort to secure a temporary truce in Aleppo. Staffan de Mistura made his comments in an interview with BBC's Chief International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet.
Syria's U.N. Envoy is struggling to convince warring sides in the northern city of Aleppo to agree a truce to reduce the violence and allow the delivery of badly-needed aid. He told me he was willing to talk to everyone to save lives. He said there were no talks now with the Al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, but he hoped they were listening to his appeal, and there was a possibility he would talk to them, too. His comments come amid reports that al-Nusra Front is considering cutting ties with Al-Qaeda to pave the way for funds and arms from the Gulf state of Qatar, which, like the West, is struggling to find a strong ally in the fight against the so-called Islamic State, as well as President Assad's forces.
At least 45 people in northeastern Nigeria have been killed by suspected Boko Haram militants. Witnesses said the militants attacked the village in Borno State at dawn on Tuesday, killing men and boys. Richard Hamilton has the details.
The attack came at dawn during morning prayers. Residents who escaped by hiding in the bush said the gunmen sought out the men and young boys from the village and murdered them. There was chaos and panic, they said, and then dead bodies scattered everywhere. The residents also complained that the army was nowhere to be seen. This latest slaughter comes despite announcements from Nigeria and its neighbours that they are winning the war against Boko Haram. News of the attacks has only just emerged because of the remoteness of the location. The village lies about 100km south of the state capital, Maiduguri. It's also thought that Boko Haram had destroyed communication networks in the area.
Lawyers for the family of Michael Brown, the unarmed black teenager who was killed by police in the U.S. city of Ferguson last year, say they are planning a civil suit against the officer who shot him. Darren Wilson has known since November that he wouldn't face any criminal charges after shooting dead Michael Brown. Yesterday, the Department of Justice announced he also wouldn't face any charges relating to federal civil rights laws. But it seems he could end up in court anyway, civil court. Now Mr. Brown's family has said it will sue. It comes as an investigation by the federal government found racial bias in Ferguson's law enforcement operation, which seems more about revenue-raising through fines than proper policing practice.

“Residents said the blast shocked most of Aleppo after rebels set off a large quantity of explosives in a tunnel dug under the area of the much feared air force intelligence headquarters. There are conflicting accounts whether the building itself was damaged or destroyed. It's been a key target for the rebels ever since the battle for Syria's largest city began more than two years ago. They've tried many times to capture it. Immediately after the explosion, heavy fighting broke out with rebel factions bombarding the area and trying to advance while government forces shelled back and called in airstrikes.”

“Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's attorney Judy Clarke told the court that the defendant did carry out the bombings. But she will argue Tamerlan who died in a shootout with police three days after the bombing was the ringleader. Earlier, the prosecution said Tsarnaev's goal on that day was to kill or maim as many people as possible. In a legal ruling, the defense suffered a setback when a judge said that they would be limited from an extent to which they could make the influence of his elder brother part of the case.”

Undercover MI5 officers believe he decided to attack the Arndale shopping center in Manchester during the Easter holiday in 2009. The key piece of evidence was an E-mail that he sent to his al-Qaeda handover in Pakistan. They talked a plan for a wedding with a woman called Nadia, code words for the attack and a type of bombs that would be used. Found guilty on all three charges, he now faces up to life imprisonment.”

Crimea, the path to the motherland, coming soon on Russian State Television. It sounds and looks like the trailer for an action film, a hero here on screen is Vladimir Putin. Revealing the truth now seems like defiance, but it does cast even stronger doubt than ever over his claims that the fighting in eastern Ukraine is a popular uprising and Russia is not involved. Here, at home, though, Mr. Putin's comments are likely to play well.

I would describe this letter as the continuation of a partisan strategy to undermine the President's ability to conduct foreign policy and advance our national security interests around the globe. The fact is we have heard Republicans now for quite some time, including the principal author of this letter, make clear that their goal was to undermine these negotiations.

A French journalist held hostage for ten months by Islamic State militants in Syria has described how he secretly wrote a children's book in captivity. Nicolas Henin told the BBC that his story, called Will Daddy Hedgehog Ever Come Home, was written on scraps of paper at night with a fellow French journalist. It grew out of a game to relieve the boredom of captivity devised by a British aid worker, David Haines, who was later killed by his captors. Mr. Henin said he was struck by how much cultural background the detainees shared with their captors.

“Muhammad Musallam left his home in East Jerusalem for Turkey last year, apparently intend to join the so-called Islamic State in Syria. A few months later, a magazine linked to ISIS carried a long interview in his name, which contained what purported to be a confession that he'd been sent by Israel to infiltrate the extremist organization. A grim 13-minute-long video has now been released, showing a young man who appears to be Muhammad Musallam, kneeling in an orange jump suit, facing the camera in an empty field. Behind him stand two figures in camouflage fatigues, one of whom appears to be a child, chosen to have to deepen the shock value of what follows. The child seems to shoot the kneeling figure in the head and then to fire further shots into the body.”

“Hillary Clinton admitted that in hindsight she had made a mistake opting to use just one email account, her private email address. But she was adamant. She had not broken any rules or laws, had not shared any classified information by email, and insisted she was now opening up her email correspondence to an unprecedented level of scrutiny. Her critics, especially Republicans, are unlikely to be satisfied with her explanation. But so far, this has not affected the approval ratings of a woman who could still run for president of the United States.”

It alleged racial bias in the city police department and court system and outlined ways in which the police and courts functioned as a money-making enterprise, mostly targeting the city’s African American population. Mr. Jackson has so far resisted calls to step down over his handling of the shooting of the unarmed black teenager and weeks of protests that followed.”

“Even in the smarter neighbourhoods, there are people who set out little carpets or broughttheir mattresses out in front of their homes and have been staying there through the day, through the night. If you walk into the market areas, you can see people sitting on the kerb. Allpeople are just walking around. It looks as almost nobody in the city is indoors at any givenmoment. Coming back to these shores having spent some weeks in America, it’s been fascinating tocompare the general election campaign here with the presidential campaign just launchedthere.
There are some striking differences. For instance, in America one of the first things presidentialcandidates have been boasting about is how much money they’ve raised. Somehow I can’timagine candidates doing the same here, where we still feel, I think, that votes shouldn’t besomething money can buy.

Then again much of the talk in America is about the various segments of the electorate. Cancandidate X win the Hispanic vote, or the evangelical vote, or the African American vote, whereas here, it seems to me, we still think of voters as individuals, who have viewsindependent of their ethnicity or religion or lack of it. And those are attitudes worth valuingand protecting.

But despite the differences I find myself thinking more and more about what a difficultachievement democracy is and how much history had to be worked through and how painendured before Britain and America arrived at it.

Just a quarter of a century ago, as the Berlin Wall fell, the Soviet Union imploded and the ColdWar came to an end, people spoke as if democracy had won its final battle and would nowspread throughout the world. Then almost immediately, we were faced with bloody ethnic warin the former Yugoslavia.

Just four years ago, with the Arab Spring, again it seemed as if democracy was about tospread throughout the Middle East. And instead again there has been bloodshed and civil war.

There is nothing natural about democracy. It’s the legacy of two great ancient civilisations,Greece, that gave us the word ‘democracy’ itself, and the Judeo Christian heritage that saidthat we are all equally in the image and likeness of God and should therefore have an equal sayin deciding our collective future.

Its first stirrings came in the seventeenth century after Europe had been ravaged by religiouswar. That was when Milton, Hobbes, Spinoza and Locke, turned to the Hebrew Bible and therefound the idea of the wrongness of ruling over others against their will. Full democracy stilltook time, but that’s where it began.

So when people speak of an election campaign being boring, I say: three cheers forboredom once you consider what the alternatives really are. Democracy is one of the greatachievements of humankind and we should never take it for granted.

The Sunday Times Rich List was published this week. It’s always good for a giggle and I like tohave my annual grump about not being on it. This year’s list comes with the status-crushingstatistic that you need 100 million pounds to join the country’s richest 1000 people. Although, apparently, a list that was once dominated by inherited wealth is now largely made up of self-made men and women. So perhaps there’s hope for us all.

The idea that as individuals we can be self-made is one of the most persuasive in our culture.Seen by some as something to aspire to. On the surface, it seems admirable enough. Thatsomeone of humble origins breaks out of their social position and achieves wealth or statusby their own efforts has romantic appeal. But I confess, whenever someone is described asself-made a little alarm goes off in my head.

Not least because I think it contains a delusion. No one is really self-made. Much as we’d alllove to make out that we’ve got to where we’ve got to because of our own efforts, we are allshaped and moulded by the people and circumstances we encounter in our lives. The mostindividualistic, self-driven, talented person will at some point need other people to help themsucceed. Even if it’s to exploit them.

There’s a healthy perspective in recognising that the good things that come our way are notalways of our own making. The idea that someone can be entirely self-made offends this reality. It also offends our humanity, for it begs the questions: was a self-made person a personbefore they made it? And what about the person who never makes it?

If there’s pride in the humble bragging of the self-made, perhaps the real peril lies in self-worship. This danger was precisely observed by Disraeli who when told that the radicalpolitician John Bright had a humble background and was an entirely self-made man, answered, ‘I know he is – and he adores his maker too.’

Scripture offers a helpful corrective here: ‘Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled andeveryone who humbles themselves will be exalted.’ The problem for the self-made person isn’tthe riches, or the status, it’s the danger of forgetting who helped them get there. It can be agood thing to be fruitful, to find purpose and fulfilment in work, and even riches, but we needto keep checking to see Who it is that made us what we are.

I end with some advice I once heard. Whether you are doing well or even if you’re not, a goodway of keeping perspective, and a sense of who you are, is to stand naked in front of a mirrorand repeat the verse from Psalm 139 that says: ‘I will give thanks to You because I am fearfullyand wonderfully made.’ I guarantee you will see yourself more clearly.
